In the year
1993, G. Schaefer received a letter from Israel
including 4 photo-graphs and the description of the following incidence that
had taken place in Israel.
A befriended Israeli, whom the artist had come to know during a renovation of
his Fatherland flag in 1990 in Berlin,
had incidentally met a Palestinian who combined the Israeli and Palestinian
flag in the yard of his house. Amazed by what he saw the Israeli asked what
was the intention and meaning of this action. The Palestinian replied: “As
you can see I connect your flag with mine, you may understand it as a symbol
for peace.“ The Israeli approached and explained
that a German friend of him had combined the German and Israeli flag in a
painting on the Berlin
Wall. This time the Palestinian was astonished. He invited the stranger into
his house. He explained him he was
inspired by this “Berlin-Wall-Artist“ to dare the
same with their two flags. “Please, send him these photos and tell him about
our encounter.” Eleven years later the
wheel will turn full circle at its starting point, the Berlin
Wall. May this, besides numerous worldwide actions of peace activists,
contribute to compensating these days lack of communication and the failure
of politics. (Look rubric international peace
action).
